Cell Phones in Unit #1 and #2 Not Observed

This accident occurred as Unit #1 was eastbound on Rt 6 and Unit #2 was westbound. Operator of Unit 1 was attempting to make a left turn into a private driveway and apparently did not see Unit #2 approaching in the westbound lane. Operator #2 swerved to the right and both units impacted near the north fog line in the westbound lane. Unit #2 stuck its left front with the left front of Unit #1. After impact, Unit 2 continues westerly into a ditch area where it rolled over and came to a rest 163 feet from impact facing south in the westbound lane. Both operator 2 and passenger were ejected from the vehicle. There were no scrape marks from Unit #1 on the pavement and dirt and debris were noted on the roadway that had fallen from the underneath of Unit #1 on impact showing it did not move after impact. There was a light tire mark observed in the west bound lane from Unit #2 that measured 57 feet to point of impact. There was a dark tire mark noted from point of impact to the ditch which appeared to be from the left side tire of Unit #2.

Witness Robert Lynch interviewed on the scene and stated he was traveling westbound. A black sporty car went flying by him in Weldbank then the blue voltswagon passed him on a curve in Weldbank. He related he seen the two cars hit and it appeared to him when they hit, they were on the yellow line or in the eastbound lane. He stated it all happened so fast it was hard to say. He stated he did not know if they gray car was turning or not.

Witness Amy Doyle interviewed on scene says she related a Black Fiero passed her by Mangiones and the Blue VW was right on its tail. She related she seen the two vehicle hit from a distance and it appeared to her the Blue VW was over the line or on the centerline when it hit the Chevy. She related the Chevy was stopped in her lane to turn into her driveway.

William Foreman stopped at the accident scene. He stated he observed a black Fiero and the Blue Voltswagon passing him outside of Sheffield going real fast.

Robert Korbar telephones this officer and stated he was driving on the Saybrook stretch and a black Fiero with a wing and the blue Voltswagon passed hi, just out of Sheffield and they were flying.

I interviewed operator #1 at Warren General Hospital. She related she was heading east and slowing to turn into her driveway. She related she had her turn signal on. She related she was going slow to make the turn. She related she never saw the other car coming. She related she could not remember if she started to make her turn or not because it happened so fast.

I interviewed Craig Vanderhoof. Vanderhoof was driver of the Black Fiero traveling ahead of the Blue Voltswagon. He stated he was traveling from Sheffield this day with operator #2 following him. He related he was by himself. He related he did not see the accident happen. He stated Lesa Hoden was driving the Voltswagon. He stated he was not racing with the Voltswagon. He stated he does not remember how fast he was going and does not know how fast operator #2 was going. He stated he was the only person in his vehicle.

Unit #1 and #2 were removed from the scene by Lanes Towing.

Operator #2 and passenger cannot be interviewed at this time due to the serious nature of their injuries.

Photographs were taken of the scene and will be retained on station.

This officer was contacted on September 24, 2003. This two vehicle crash occurred in Mead Township. The lead investigator, Trp. K. Neiswonger had questioned where the point of impact was located.

This officer arrived at the scene. While at the scene tire marks from the left side of the Voltswagon were observed near the north fog line. These marks traveled at the northwest angle into the adjacent ditch. These marks are dark in color. Near the edges the marks are waved and not completely straight. These Anomiciers  suggest that these tire marks were created post impact.

Also observed was a light tire mark edge which was located on the north berm. This mark leads up to the impact point and was made by the Voltswagons Right side tire. This mark was 57 in length prior to impact.

It is this officers opinion that impact occurred in the westbound lane in an area near the north fog line in the mouth of the private driveway.

This officer is a crash reconstructionist stationed at the Erie headquarters.
